Pictures For Elmhurst
The Book
Coming Spring 2024
In April 2020, a group of New York City-based photographers and creatives established Pictures For Elmhurst, a photography fundraising initiative to assist NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst with the purchase of PPE and life-saving equipment. The project rallied the creative community and launched on April 10 with 96 New York-based photographers, expanding to feature 187 prints by artists from around the world. The response was overwhelming, with $1.38 million raised by the end of the 10-day fundraiser. Jason Farago of The New York Times, who named the fundraiser as one of the best moments in art in 2020, wrote that the project “reaffirmed that artists already have the capability to build new systems, and can get things moving in a matter of days.” The fundraiser has gone to serve as a template for artists responding constructively and quickly to some of the world’s most pressing humanitarian and environmental crises. It’s a beautiful thing.
Pictures For Elmhurst, the book, documents the original fundraiser and the spirit of that moment to include over 170 of the original images graciously donated by the participating artists, essays and contributions from those at the very heart of the pandemic’s epicenter, and a portrait series by Camila Falquez of Elmhurst’s staff taken in the spring of 2022.
This volunteer-based effort will again direct all proceeds to the Elmhurst Hospital Auxiliary, which makes funds available where and when patients need them the most. The second oldest public hospital in New York City, Elmhurst Hospital serves close to one million patients each year, regardless of their ability to pay, in one of the most ethnically diverse communities in the world. Their work is so essential.
